Kitenga Girls Secondary School
Girls Education Collaborative (GEC) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to expand access to education for girls facing barriers shaped by poverty, gender inequality, and geographic isolation. At GEC, the belief is that twelve years of safe, quality education can change the course of a girl’s life. When girls gain literacy, numeracy, confidence, and practical skills, they are better equipped to shape their own futures and strengthen their communities.
GEC links arms in allyship with local change agents in rural, underserved regions of developing economies, where high rates of gender inequality and economic poverty persist. In 2012, GEC partnered with the Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa (IHSA) to help bring the STEM-focused Kitenga Girls Secondary School (KGSS) to life on 1,000 acres of land purchased by IHSA in Tanzania’s Mara Region.
Through this partnership, GEC has developed a locally led, holistic model for girls from rural communities who might otherwise never have the opportunity to attend secondary school. Kitenga Girls Secondary School and GEC invest in the whole girl through strong academics, STEM learning, health and wellness, and girls’ empowerment.
STEM Is For Everyone’s funding will support core learning equipment, including computers, power and connectivity infrastructure, and hands-on STEM tools such as robotics kits and a 3-D printer.
Beyond serving as a technology classroom, the Center will function as an applied innovation hub, challenging students to identify needs within their school and community and use technology, engineering, and design tools to prototype solutions. Embedded within the academic program and aligned with emerging technical pathways, the Center will strengthen employability and leadership while positioning girls not simply as technology users, but as STEM innovators and future changemakers!
